The Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation joyfully commemorates May 29th as Nigeria’s Democracy Day, acknowledging the significant milestone of 25 years of uninterrupted multi-party democratic rule since 1999. We take delight in the fact that democratic institutions have become firmly established, allowing citizens to actively participate in democratic processes, particularly through elections.
However, as we reflect on the past 25 years of democratic experience and the substantial resources invested, we must acknowledge that the expected dividends have not been fully realized. The processes of ushering in leaders at various levels remain flawed, leading to irregularities and needless litigations. The quality of political leadership is still inadequate. Elections have increasingly become mere four-year rituals, while political offices are frequently rotated among a close circle of political elites. Regrettably, citizens continue to face worsening socio-economic challenges, including a deteriorating economy, security concerns, inadequate education, and healthcare services.
It is crucial that we engage in a comprehensive stock taking and reassessment to address these shortcomings. The political space must be opened for full citizens’ participation while ensuring that judicial processes are immune from political interference. Leaders must demonstrate transparency and accountability in their actions, placing the interests of the people at the center of politics rather than serving themselves.
Furthermore, there is an urgent need for the separation of powers and functions between the various arms of government. This will help prevent undue interferences and ensure the checks and balances necessary for a thriving democracy. The judiciary must be independent and free from any form of political influence, allowing it to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of citizens.
The Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation calls upon all Nigerians to hold their leaders accountable for their policies, actions, and decisions. We urge citizens to be more politically active and aware, to exercise their right to full political participation, and to engage in constructive dialogues to shape the future of our nation. It is through active citizenship that we can collectively bring about the necessary changes and foster a more inclusive and prosperous society.
On this momentous occasion, we join all Nigerians in celebrating the attainment of 25 years of unbroken democratic rule.
Happy Democracy Day!
