Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation Cautions Against Mass Protests Advocates

By Ibrahim Ammani

The Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation expresses deep concern over the current socio-economic situation in the country. The dire economic conditions, characterized by record-high inflation and skyrocketing prices, have inflicted severe hardships upon Nigerians, making it increasingly arduous to meet their basic needs.

While we acknowledge the growing apprehension and restlessness among citizens, particularly the youth, we vehemently discourage any form of protests. History has shown that such protests are often exploited by opportunistic elements, leading to rampant violence, looting, arson, and senseless loss of lives and properties. Any disruption of law and order will only exacerbate the already dire economic situation, further amplifying the suffering of our people.

We urgently call upon parents, religious leaders, and community influencers to actively engage with their children and wards, strongly urging them to refrain from participating in any form of riotous activities. It is imperative that we safeguard peace and stability for the collective well-being of our beloved nation.

Furthermore, we implore religious, political, and traditional leaders to initiate immediate and substantive dialogue with the government, effectively highlighting the profound hardships faced by our people. Constructive engagement is of paramount importance in identifying and implementing lasting solutions to the socio-economic challenges that confront our great nation.

In addition to championing dialogue, we underscore the vital significance of collaborative efforts between the Federal, State and Local Governments in addressing the prevailing situation. Local and State Governments must actively collaborate with the Federal Government to implement robust mass employment programmes, poverty eradication initiatives, and the active encouragement of youth engagement in agricultural and SME activities. By creating ample employment opportunities and nurturing entrepreneurship, we can alleviate the economic burdens borne by Nigerians and empower our youth to become agents of national development.

Governments at all levels must redouble their efforts to urgently bring down the exorbitant prices of essential commodities, particularly food items, which directly impacts the lives of our people. It is imperative that decisive measures are taken to ensure the availability and affordability of food for all citizens.

Furthermore, elected members of legislative bodies at both the State and Federal levels must diligently fulfill their mandate to represent and advocate for the interests of their constituents. They must be proactive in ensuring that the concerns and grievances of the people are heard, acknowledged, and addressed effectively.

The Federal Government must intensify efforts to combat insecurity, particularly in the North, where bandits and kidnappers pose a constant threat to the lives and well-being of Nigerians. Swift action is needed to protect citizens from violence and extortion by bandits to ensure people can access their farms and business activities without fear of being kidnapped.

The Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation remains resolutely committed to promoting dialogue, peace, and holistic development in Nigeria. We stand firmly ready to offer our unwavering support to all efforts aimed at effectively addressing the pressing issues that confront our society. Together, through dialogue, collaborative action, and effective governance, we have the capacity to triumph over the challenges we face and build an inclusive and prosperous society that benefits all Nigerians.

N432B Fraud: Kaduna Lawmaker Dismisses El-Rufai’s Legal Challenge as ‘Last-Ditch Effort’

By Aminu Abba

Hon. Mahmud Lawal, a member of the Kaduna State House of Assembly representing Zaria constituency, has described former Governor Nasiru El-Rufai’s decision to pursue legal action regarding the ongoing probe into alleged misappropriation of N432 billion during his tenure as “laughable” and “the final desperate act of a failing administration.”

In an interview with our correspondent in Kaduna, Hon. Lawal, also known as Bola Ige, a member of the committee investigating the alleged misappropriation, expressed dismay at El-Rufai’s sudden interest in the judiciary after neglecting it for so long.

“El-Rufa’i seems to have conveniently forgotten the Principle of Separation of Powers enshrined in the constitution, which mandates non-interference between the executive, legislature, and judiciary. Does he believe that by resorting to legal action, he can obstruct the legislature from carrying out its constitutional duties? Rest assured, El-Rufa’i will face the consequences of his actions, and the public will soon witness this,” he emphasized.

The lawmaker highlighted that Kaduna State had never experienced such blatant misuse of public funds as under El-Rufai’s tenure, where funds were allegedly misappropriated under the guise of project implementation. He noted that the claimed expenditures were significantly disproportionate to the actual work accomplished.

“For instance, let me illustrate what occurred at Kofar Doka in Zaria, my constituency. Billions of Naira were purportedly allocated for road projects, but tragically, the only visible activity was bulldozers demolishing people’s homes, rendering them homeless,” he revealed.

Lawal further criticized the projects carried out by the El-Rufa’i administration in Kaduna State, alleging that they were primarily aimed at personal enrichment, with little regard for the welfare of the populace. He pointed out the deteriorating condition of roads from Unguwar Dosa to Malali and the questionable work undertaken at Kasuwar Magani in Kajuru. The shops started to wear off even before occupation by traders. The most brazen display of dishonesty was the metropolitan rail line project, for which a substantial amount of money in billions was allocated. But what happened to the project, and where is the money? The only evidence seems to be paper records indicating spending on surveys and map design.”

Hon. Mahmud Lawal Bola Ige further explained that the public funds misappropriated by El-Rufai administration under the guise of projects execution amount to more than N432 billion and urged the people of Kaduna State to support the probe committee in their efforts to recover the funds for the benefit of all.
